No Longer Just Watching
This is more a flexible concept—I have given a version of this presentation multiple times, both by myself and with other cosplayers. Positive community is important for everyone, and creativity often opens more community doors than we sometimes notice. Finding and walking through those doors can make a difference in more than one way. Originally presented as “From Ballrooms to Battlefields” at the inaugural Rebel Scum convention 2024.
Some of us have a character who changes everything. And for some of us there is a moment when it no longer feels like enough to watch them in their world, but we feel compelled to become a part of that world, and in that moment another cosplayer is born.
This presentation traces how a Star Wars obsession can grow into a cosplay journey that blossoms into full craftsmanship costuming: the early humbling projects, the last minute cobbled-together ensembles, the communities and resources that filled in the gaps, and the self-teaching that slowly turned curiosity and determination into skill.
We’ll talk about what actually helps at the beginning–because assembling your first costume can be intimidating, and also uniquely rewarding–and why it’s worth showing up in the first place. Cosplay has a way of connecting you to your creativity, to other makers and fans, and to the stories that have always mattered most to you. If you’ve felt the tug of that moment–where it no longer feels like enough to watch–this is your invitation to step into the cosplay world.
